How to measure your hand shape

Put your dominant hand flat on a table. Measure two things: the length of the palm from the base of the wrist to the base of the fingers, and the length of the middle finger from base to tip.

If the palm is about the same length as the middle finger, that is a square palm. If the palm is clearly longer than the middle finger, that is a long palm. Then compare the finger length to the width of the palm. Fingers shorter than the palm is wide are short fingers. Fingers longer than the palm is wide are long fingers.

Earth hand: square palm, short fingers

The earth hand reads as steady and physical. People with earth hands tend to be practical, patient, and comfortable working with their hands. The lines on an earth palm are usually few and deep. What is there is written clearly. Earth hands are common among builders, gardeners, athletes, and anyone whose work grounds them in the physical world.

Air hand: square palm, long fingers

The air hand reads as mental. Long fingers on a stable base suggests a thinker who returns to their body when they want to. Air hands are usually well-marked with a clear head line and a long, sensitive heart line. The tradition puts writers, teachers, analysts, and social organisers in this category.

Fire hand: long palm, short fingers

The fire hand reads as action-first. Long palm suggests emotional life takes up space, but the short fingers cut through the deliberation. Fire hands often have many small lines all over the palm, which the tradition reads as a busy inner life that keeps generating new plans. Founders, performers, leaders, restless careers.

Water hand: long palm, long fingers

The water hand is the sensitive hand. Long everywhere, usually with a lot of fine lines and a soft, cool palm. Palmistry reads it as intuitive, artistic, and easily affected by mood and environment. Water hands are common on musicians, therapists, poets, and carers.

Reading a heart line on a water hand: it will feel like the whole reading. Water hands attach through feeling first.

Why shape matters more than any single line

A curved heart line means one thing on a fire hand and something else on a water hand. On a fire hand it reads as expressive intensity that burns hot and moves on. On a water hand the same line reads as depth of feeling that stays. The shape is the frame. The line is the picture.

This is why any decent reading starts with the shape and only then moves to the lines. Skip the shape and you are reading a sentence with no context.

How shape pairs with mounts and fingers

The shape sets the temperament. The mounts colour it. The fingers and thumb add the detail. A fire hand with a strong Jupiter mount reads as a natural leader. The same fire hand with a weak Jupiter and a strong Luna reads as a restless dreamer instead. Combine them, do not read them in isolation.
